Plein Air Café outdoor patio, 4:15pm

  • Wind on wood 
  • Car exhaust, even at this distance from the road 
  • Bell tower chiming, can’t pick out a distinct melody 
  • Clinking of silverware on plates 
  • Someone clunking down on a wooden bench
  • Steps on the stone path
  • Crunchy walking across gravel
  • “Now that I’m a sophomore, things are starting to speed up a little bit”
  • Distantly, sirens 
  • Slamming the service window closed 
  • A white picket fence
  • Dandelions growing wild
  • White and blue table umbrellas
  • Green tinted glass 
  • Beige wood on tables and benches
  • Red on the edges of a decorative grass in a planter box 
  • Bright turquoise and teal on a man’s jacket
  • Hot pink phone case
  • Brown beer bottle 
  • Neon yellow, orange, and blue on sneakers
  • A mouse peeked out from beneath a bush
  • It ran away

  • Out of everyone’s sight but mine

  • A bird somewhere far above in the trees chirping repetitively 

 

  • A barista calling out a drink 
  • The name kind of sounds like “Eeeeehhhh” 
  • Sirens getting closer,
  • But still many blocks away
  • A man reading on a tablet and his phone at the same time
  • Black and white Nike sneakers must work here
  • He just went in the back door 
  • The sun through the leaves of the tree turn them bright green
  • Bells ringing very loudly 
  • A familiar melody, but I can’t name it. 
  • Someone taking off a scarf, getting ready to sit down
  • Someone unwrapping a sandwich 
  • The paper crinkles 
  • The sun on the windows exposes their dustiness
  • The tint hides the people inside 
  • Dandelion leaves wiggling in the air 
  • Even when the breeze is very slow
  • Another drink called out 
  • Sounds like “Azzugaah” 
  • Person in shorts, sweater, airpods, and a brown leather messenger bag sits down with their to-go drink 
  • The fence on the street side of the patio is made of a honeycomb metal sheeting 
  • Another drink for “Jerry”
  • Red jacket guy with white shoes clearing his glass and trash 
  • Another bird, but maybe a large bug, making clicking sounds in the tree
  • The trash is being emptied. 
  • Something steaming in a white ceramic mug
  • Something reddish in a glass cup with ice 
  • Inside, a white 12oz can of beer
  • The pitcher of iced tea
  • Someone bumping music with heavy bass in their car
  • The clicking animal above me,
  • A little louder
  • A woman smiling, showing a man a picture on her phone
  • Someone gesturing on the table,

  • Someone calling to an acquaintance, “Maurice!”
  • “You look like you’re gonna….” 
  • Someone taking out pens from a case 
  • One purple, one pink. 
  • Martín carrying a bottle of something red inside
  • A person carrying a purse with a thick strap 
  • It has words on it
  • Someone looking at a spreadsheet on a laptop 
  • Very very floral patterned pants 
  • The sun has moved 
  • The rectangle of light hits my feet now 
  • It feels warm. 
  • Person with the purse chugs water
  • Woman with a tote bag and fleece jacket looking for a place to sit
  • Drink for “Anna”
  • No one responds
  • Once again, “AaAAnnnnNuuuuhhhhh” 
  • Two people have moved to the same side of the table, 
  • Looking at something on a computer 
  • One is wearing headphones
  • White and black Nikes walks around the patio 
  • He clears a forgotten plate 
  • “Anna” and company eat soup, bread
  • They have discarded a plate with some salad greens left on it
  • Man looking at a spreadsheet,
  • Waves to an acquaintance in a blue quarter zip and black rimmed glasses
  • Martín offers me a pastry 
  • I get a piece of banana loaf
  • A large group approaches the door, 
  • They are speaking German
  • One person has pink hair in two buns 
  • Drink for “Patricia” 
  • A green hose has appeared near the back door, leading inside

 

  • A collective “oohhh” from out of sight
  • The spreadsheet man sighs loudly
  • “Oh god I wish!”
  • Quiet honk from the street
  • A man with a backpack and a white plastic bag throws something away
  • Drink for “Lauren”
  • Drink for “William” called inside, 
  • Then again through the service window
  • Martín and someone else walking through the back door
  • Martín carrying a gallon of orange juice and a gallon of milk 
  • A woman in a black coat and a bag with “Tokyo” printed on it in many colors
  • “WiLLiaMM” 
  • A black dog on a harness 
  • Someone waiting at the window for assistance
  • I think two people are speaking Japanese,
  • They switched to English. 
  • A child runs to a woman in a pink shirt and a vest
  • A paper bag is handed through the window to the person waiting
  • The kid is sent back inside with instructions
  • The dog hops up onto a bench
  • Someone sitting by the window rubs their eyes, and continues reading a book 
  • Someone using the hose to wash off floor mats outside. 
  • They unroll one, wash it, roll it back up and lean it against the wall
  • An exclamation from Spreadsheet and Blue Quarter Zip 
  • Barista through the service window pouring milk into a drink 
  • Drink for “Tobias” 
  • Drink for “Tobias” again 
  • Someone in athletic gear holding a pastry and drink, walking quickly towards the road
  • White and black Nikes approaching a woman, taking her empty plate 
  • Drink for “Don” or “John” maybe? 
  • Two hot teas in to-go cups 
  • “It’s just, I’m not good at, like…” 
  • Crinkling of a paper pastry bag
  • “What are you waiting on, sir?”
  • “Uhh, a hot cider” 
  • Someone in a pink raincoat and a yellow hair tie going inside
  • Person waiting for hot cider posts up next to the trash can, 
  • Staring at the service window, arms crossed
  • Now pacing back and forth, hand on chin
  • Someone walks past the fridges inside, blocking the light temporarily
  • “Okay, he like…” 
  • A girl in a white button down and jeans 
  • Scarf on, backpack on, throwing away an empty cup
  • “I mean, apparently…” 
  • “Just find an airbus” 
  • A woman gesturing to the person she is talking to 
  • Hands flat positioned on either side of her face, 
  • Then moving hands away from herself
  • Drink for “John” 
  • Clear “J” sound this time. 
  • Back door opens, 
  • An empty black dish bucket is tossed to the ground
  • Someone walking across the patio, waving to the woman in fleece
  • White and black Nikes hands “John” two boxes of food
  • The bells have not stopped playing
